Lamb Curry
There is a reason why people drink lager with curry.
It cools the palate and contrasts well with the rich spiciness. But to avoid the beer being too bland for the food it is best to go for one of the newer and more heavily hopped lagers.
The best of the bunch though broke all these rules and was a Belgian style ale brewed in the US! What you drink beer out of is really important and for many connoisseurs the best thing is a large wine glass.
These days they fit a whole can of beer and every beer tastes so much better. You actually taste more with your nose than with your mouth (the mouth has pretty rudimentary flavour receptors, but the nose has thousands), so if you drink your beer straight out of the bottle or the can then you lose so much of the bouquet.
Alastair Scott’s Recommended Beer matches
Heineken – plenty of flavour in this beer and goes really well with the curry
St Austell Korev – A great UK lager from one of the great UK brewers. Worth seeking out.
Blue Moon – An unusual beer brewed in the US but with a Belgian style. It has a softness like a wheat beer but with a bit more spice and so worked really well with my curry!
